The Teachings of Abraham and the Secret Law of Attraction

March 20th, 2008 by Ryan

Do you have a mentor?  In this increasingly virtual world, perhaps your mentor is someone you have never met, but rather a teacher who's products you have purchased and practiced for many years.

I'd like to introduce you to one of my "mentors" so that you may realize profound changes in your life just as I have.

You may be familiar of The Secret and its Law of Attraction, yet are you familiar with the origin of those teachings?

For the past 2 decades, Esther and Jerry Hicks have been spreading the powerful wisdom of Abraham with books, cds, and in-person workshops.

Abraham is a group of spiritual teachers speaking through Esther Hicks.  They speak about the three universal laws of the universe:

  1. The Law of Attraction
  2. The Law of Deliberate Creation
  3. The Law of Allowing

In case you aren't familiar with The Law of Attraction, the basic idea is like this:

We are the creators of our reality.  Everything that is a part of our life we have attracted somehow with our thoughts.  The universe will bring to us whatever we think about, whether we are wanting it or not wanting it.

So if we keep thinking about getting out of debt, we will attract more debt.  Whether you are wanting debt or resisting debt, you are still attracting debt so the universe will give you more debt.

Thoughts that have stronger emotion attached to them attract faster than thoughts without emotion.  Emotions are our guidance system.  They tell us whether a thought we are thinking is leading us in the direction of the highest good or not.

When we have thoughts that are in alignment with who we really are, we feel joy, happiness, and excitement.  When we have thoughts that are not in alignment with who we really are, we feel fear, sadness, or despair.

So if we begin to think about debt, we will feel worry or stress.  This is our inner being telling us to change our thoughts.

In any given moment, our thoughts and emotions are attracting something from the universe.  These can be described as us offering "vibrations".

By thinking about debt, you activate the debt vibrations inside you.  If instead, you focus on wealth, you are activating wealth vibrations inside you and will begin to attract wealth.

The key with using the law of attraction is to let go of the yearning and trust that it will come.  99% of the time, you will be a vibrational match before anything manifests into your life.

Here is a 5 part series of videos on The Law of Attraction.

    Hi Ryan,

The idea of the law of attraction goes back well beyond 30 years.

The idea of prosperity thinking can be found early in the 20th century eg. Catherine Ponder.

However helpful, it isn’t terribly new. But sometimes the old ways are the best.

Not going to watch the videos, but a nice explanation nonetheless.

  4. Sue Ann Edwards Says:

It’s also known as ‘we reap as we sow’ or in terms of quantum physics, negative fields attracts negative poles, positive fields attract positive poles.

It is a fundamental essence of Unity to not separate ourselves from any and all experiences we attract into our life.

Once we understand how we are NOT victims, that the whole idea of victimization is loony tunes, then we will understand the law of attraction.

  5. Ryan Says:

Evan, that may be…but existence is happening all at once anyway right 😛

The ideas have been around for a while in one form or another but Abraham is one of the first to lay a solid and clear foundation for understanding “the law of attraction”, which is why I highly recommend their material.

    Cool, Tup.

Good point Sue Ann, the more we understand the law of attraction, the less we see ourselves or others as “victims.” It’s very liberating.

positive thinking in combination with positive actions yearn positive results. that is my take on the law of abundance.

we do not have a control over the fruit of our actions you might perform the action with the uttermost positivity but that wont guarantee a successful outcome…

  9. Ryan Says:

Yeah its the intention that matters, though when we are aligned with the highest good we always get good fruits…it just may not be in the same form as what we expected.

Jerry and Esther and the gang of “Abraham” have their share of critics. But that’s okay. Critics need to have a reality too. I’m pretty conservative when it comes to the Law of Attraction, in the sense that I don’t personally think the universe is a big gumball machine. However, one thing that can’t be denied is the force that positive intention has upon our existence. After all, as long as we’re here on this ride we might as well make it enjoyable, right?

  12. Ryan Says:

Jon, right on about that. Whats the point of life if not to enjoy it?

  13. Lee Says:

It’s funny, I sort of went though life for a while and I intuitively understood The Law Of Attraction, but then one day, totally by “accident” I heard it articulated wonderfully by Esther Hicks…and everything just clicked.

Ever since then, I’ve been learning and reading as much as I can, so thanks for the post.

  14. Taylor Says:

I have paid attention to the law of attraction for quite some time, but never really did anything with it, until I started to understand that you need to ask the universe what you want in the form of the specific.

Then, the more you are focused on a plan or outcome, the more everything can line up in your path.

This makes much more sense then just staying positive and saying you want to be rich.

  15. Justine Headley Says:

Esther Hicks has done a lot of research to find the spiritual teachers who speak through her. Her style is convincing but the principles are nothing new.
